Review: Quick Looks Part 1 PDF Print E-mail

Now that I've gotten mixed up in the whole iPod Touch thing, I've finally decided that there are just way too many games for me to do full reviews on.  However, I'd really like to be able to share with you some thoughts on as many games as possible.  So, I've decided to start posting reviews that are a synopsis of 3-4 different games at a time, which I will cleverly call "Quick Looks".  I actually started doing this on my Smartphone & PocketPC blog, but there I only do one game at a time.  Also, I decided that since these are abreviated reviews, I will use a simple rating system: Recommend, On The Fence, or Don't Recommend.  On The Fence are games that aren't necessarily bad, but that I also don't see myself really playing beyond writing the review.  Anyway, I hope this new "digest" format is useful to you, and I trust that it will allow me to share my opinions on a much wider range of games. Aqua Baller Free

I’m sure I had one of these sports water toys when I was a kid, though any more I couldn’t tell you which one. If I would have had a basketball one, however, I imagine it would have seemed a lot like Aqua Baller for the iPhone. From the sloshing of water when you click one of the buttons to the slight tilt required to get a ball on the edge to fall into a hoop, this is about as close to an “authentic feeling” you’ll get from this type of game short of playing the real thing. There are 3 modes: 1 minute drill, 3 minute drill and Free Play, and the drills allow you to submit your scores online. The graphics are good, the sound is sparse but appropriate, and the game play is strangely addicting. For 99 cents you can help support the author and get a pro version that has three more basketballs and no advertising. I would recommend Aqua Baller either way, but I strongly suggest you consider the pro version to encourage the author to create more quality software.

BubbleWrap

You know how you play certain games in an electronic format, all the while thinking to yourself “gee, I never expected to see this in an electronic format?” Well, BubbleWrap is one of those games. The touch screen is the perfect venue for popping bubbles, and it’s a great diversion when you’re sitting at your PC downloading something or installing a piece of software. The sound effects are perfect, and there’s more than one “popped” bubble image to help simulate real life popping – after all, no two popped bubbles look the same! To make it a “game” they added a timer and point total, but it’s more relaxing to just sit there and pop some bubbles. There’s a pro version for 99 cents that I guess allows you the chance to win some money, but I don’t feel quite as compelled to go pro here as I did with Aqua Baller. Whatever your decision, this application is at least worth the free price, and good when you want to do something on your iPhone / iPod but don’t feel like taxing your brain.

Space Deadbeef

I love scrolling shooters, especially when they are free. It seems like Space Deadbeef would be a no-brainer then. Unfortunately, I’m somewhat torn in this case. The visuals aren’t earth shattering, but they’re good. I especially like the look of the boss. The sound effects are typical space fare, but serve the game well. The music is pretty decent. The game play is even good for a couple of rounds. I like how the game uses proximity to determine your weapon type: tapping your ship launches a laser type weapon, whereas clicking the enemy launches guided missiles. Unfortunately, the controls can be as problematic as they are creative. Moving above or below your spaceship moves it up and down, regardless of whether you’re directly in line with your ship or out targeting an enemy. As a result you could be moving yourself into enemy fire as you’re attacking without even realizing it. Big fingers like mine often tend to cover the action until it is too late, resulting in unnecessary lives lost on my part. Finally, each stage is broken into 16 waves, which are comprised of 3 different types of ships and a boss. Unfortunately, once you’ve seen the enemies in the first level, you know what to expect the rest of the game, with the exception of the bad guys getting a little more aggressive each round. I realize the game is free, but a little more variety would go a long way to making this something more than “just another shooter”. If you’re desperate for a side scrolling shooter on your iPhone then at least Space Deadbeef is free – otherwise, you might want to look around a bit more.
