With a name like Killer RoboRabbits From Mars, how could you not want to try this game? It sounds like a bad 50’s B-movie monster flick, and as it turns out, it’s actually quite fun. That is, once you get past the fact that it’s frustratingly hard and if you’re as coordinated as I am you’ll probably spend lots of time replaying the same levels over and over again.

There may be a story involved somewhere, but the basic premise is that you run around each level smashing everything in sight. Each level is broken up into areas, and all targets must be destroyed before an area is cleared. A target is any sort of creature besides yourself. Disposal of these creatures won't always be easy, either. The turtle takes several blows, as you must break through his shell before you can destroy him. The worm splits several times into smaller versions of itself before it is finally gone, and there are other creatures along the way that take multiple hits before they vanish. There are also occasional items like crates that can be broken, but they don't count towards your targets. For the mass destruction type of game this seems to be, it would have been nice to have more background objects to destroy, but even without that there's plenty of destruction to be had.

There are only two things you can do to control your character. The first is that you can move it left and right, and the second is that you can swing your mallet. The game can be played using either the stylus or hardware controls, and while the stylus tends to be too sensitive, the hardware controls are a bit difficult for me to use because the game is landscape, I'm left handed, and there's no option to rotate the screen. Shame on you for that oversight, Goo Studios! The problem with the stylus is that there is a fine line between the position of the stylus required to move your character left and right and the position needed to swing the hammer. Also, you pretty much have to have the stylus right on top of the hammer to swing it, which makes swinging while moving an exceptional challenge.

Add to this the fact that the game is timed, and hopefully you'll begin to see why I might want to pull my hair out. It would have been nice to have an "easy" mode, where the game gives you a bit more time to get things done. On the other hand, not only is the game all about smashing things, but it's presented in a way that's more "Itchy and Scratchy" than "GTA". Plus, to a certain extent you can skip through levels, so at least I was able to preview some different levels that I normally wouldn't have had access to in other games of this genre.

The graphics are colorful, and the characters are well animated, especially when they go "splat" under your hammer. I was a bit disappointed that the main character didn't have more animation to it, but that's not really a big deal. I thought the use of word bubbles for things like "splat" and "bam" fit the atmosphere of the game quite well. Each level takes place in a different area, so you're not seeing the same background over and over again. The music is pretty decent, and varies with the levels, which is a nice touch. The sound effects work pretty well, especially in regards to the splattering noises.

For me, Killer RoboRabbits has a difficulty level somewhere akin to the old MegaMan games on the Nintendo. Just like those games, however, Killer RoboRabbits manages to be enjoyable enough that I can almost forget about that difficulty. Throw in the colorful atmosphere and decent soundtrack and you've got yourself a pretty good side scrolling smash-em-up game.

Overall Score: 7/10
